Understanding Puppy Culture
What it is and why it matters for your puppy
A puppy’s first weeks help shape how they approach people, learning and everyday life. Puppy Culture provides a structured approach to making those weeks count. For families, its value lies in the thoughtful preparation that begins before a puppy comes home and continues through kind, consistent care afterward.
What Puppy Culture is
Puppy Culture is a puppy rearing, socialization and training program created by dog trainer and breeder Jane Messineo Lindquist, also known as Jane Killion. It offers age appropriate guidance from birth through the early socialization period, using lessons and activities that follow a puppy’s development. [1]
Its central principle is to observe the individual puppy and offer an experience they are ready to handle. A curious puppy may willingly explore a new object; a more cautious littermate may need extra distance and time. Both can learn successfully when the experience suits their needs. The program uses positive reinforcement to encourage learning. [1]
Why the early weeks matter
The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior identifies the first three months as the most important period for puppy socialization. Safe, positive introductions during this time help puppies become familiar with the people, animals and situations they will encounter. Inadequate or frightening socialization can increase the risk of later fear and behavior difficulties. [3]
Much of this period takes place while a puppy is still with the breeder. Careful early rearing therefore offers a valuable head start. Learning continues after homecoming, and families play an essential role in building on those beginnings.
Socialization means feeling safe
Socialization involves helping a puppy form comfortable associations. Simply placing a puppy near something unfamiliar is not enough. Experiences should be gradual, rewarding and adjusted to the puppy’s response. Overwhelming encounters can increase fear rather than reduce it. [4]

What puppies can learn
Puppy Culture covers early enrichment, socialization, communication, problem solving and preparation for a new home. The following examples describe learning opportunities within the program; each puppy’s readiness determines the pace. [2]
Confidence through manageable challenges
Safe exploration and simple puzzles give puppies opportunities to try something new. A small challenge they can solve encourages initiative. The aim is to help them discover that unfamiliar things can be approached with curiosity and support. [1, 2]
Communication and early manners
Reward based activities introduce puppies to offering useful behaviors and responding to a training marker. The program includes “manding,” in which a puppy learns to ask for something through an offered behavior, often a sit. These foundations give families constructive ways to guide their puppy. [2]
Comfort with everyday experiences
The program includes sound introductions, enrichment and guidance for fear periods. These experiences are adjusted to development, rather than delivered as a fixed checklist. Preparing puppy buyers to continue the learning is also part of the program. [2]
For a Havanese family, everyday comfort has practical value: meeting visitors, hearing household activity and gradually becoming familiar with brushing and gentle handling. These are useful goals for continuing education at home. Keep sessions short and pleasant, and give the puppy a break when they need one.
Puppy Culture at DelSol Havanese
At DelSol, Puppy Culture is part of our commitment to raising happy, playful and confident puppies. We also use Early Neurological Stimulation in our puppy raising program. ENS is one early component; Puppy Culture extends into later socialization, enrichment and learning.
Our preparation includes crate training before puppies go home. Families should still expect an adjustment period in a new house, with patient support and a routine suited to their puppy. Our lifetime breeder support helps families continue the work as their companion grows.

Continuing the foundation at home
The first days should be calm and predictable. Allow time for rest, toileting, meals and getting to know the immediate household. Delay a large gathering of visitors until your puppy is settled. A new home is already a substantial change.
Introduce one manageable experience at a time, with treats, play or gentle praise that your puppy enjoys.
Allow your puppy to approach voluntarily. If they retreat, freeze or appear worried, reduce the intensity or stop and try an easier step later. [4]
Reward behaviors you want to see again, and use short, enjoyable learning sessions.
Provide a comfortable resting space and introduce brief periods of independence gradually.
Discuss safe socialization and suitable puppy classes with your veterinarian. Avoid dog parks and heavily used dog areas where health status is unknown. [3]
A foundation for lifelong learning
Puppy Culture supports thoughtful early rearing, but it cannot promise a particular adult temperament or prevent every behavior problem. Genetics, health, individual personality and later experiences also matter. A puppy will still need help with house training, chewing, settling and growing up.
The value of the program is the care behind the process: observing the puppy, choosing appropriate experiences and building learning through trust. When breeder and family continue that approach together, they give the puppy a supportive start to life as a companion.
